The beginning of this period extended from the invasion of Celtic England by Germanic tribes in the 1st half of the 5th century to 1066 ( the conquest of England by the Norman French ) . After that they had been converted into Christianity and the Anglo – Saxon's Literature began to develop from the oral form into written one . The poetry of the time was written in the vernacular of Anglo – Saxon ( old English ) e.g. Beowulf the greatest Germanic epic , and the themes and the subjects were religious . There were many people added to Literature like the major two poets Caedmon and Cynewulf and the leading scholars churchmen Bede and Alcuin . Moreover , Saxon king who love Literature and ordered to translate various books of Latin prose into old English .
Middle English Period - 1066-1500 The four and a half century between the Norman conquest in 1600 recorded a radical changes in the language , life , and culture of England and about 1500 when the standard literary language has become modern English like language of our toady . The period from 1100 to 1350 is some time called Anglo – Norman because the Literature of the era was written in Anglo – Norman not Latin . The 2ed half of the 14th century represent a new kind of Literature which is a secular kind and this was the age of Chaucer and John Gower which gave great kind of religious and satirical poems like "Piers Plowman". The 15th (Scottish Chaucerians) was the age of excellent songs, secular and religious and folk ballads and the Literature was important for popular Literature not just for upper class. The Renaissance Period -1500-1600
Elizabethan Age - 1558-1603 The expansion of this period marked from 1558 to 1603 ( the period of the reign of Elizabeth İ ) . This age considered the greatest ( in drama the greatest ) age of English Literature and recorded a rapid development in English commerce , maritime power and nationalist feeling . This time recorded the appearance of big literary writers like Sir Philip Sidney , Shakespeare ( the one who wrote Macbeth ) , Ben Jonson and other writers of prose and of dramatic , lyric and narrative poetry . Jacobean Age - 1603-1625 The age of Jacobean extended from 1558 to 1603 ( the period of the reign of James I ) . This was the period of prose writing of Bacon, John ne's sermons , and the King James translation of the Bible. It was also the time of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies and of major writings by other notable poets and playwrights including ne, Ben Jonson, etc . Caroline Age - 1625-1649
Caroline age extended from 1625 to 1649 during the reign of Charles 1 . It was the time of the English Civil War fought between the supporters of the king and the supporters of Parliament . This age recorded the appearance of many prose writers and poets (Cavalier poets ) such as John Milton began , George Herbert , Sir Thomas Browne , etc .
Commonwealth (Puritan Interregnum ) Period - 1649-1660
Commonwealth Period extended from the end of the Civil War and the execution of Charles I in 1649 to the restoration of the Stuart monarchy under Charles II in 1660. In this age drama disappeared for 18teen years after the Puritans closed the public theaters in 1642 because moral and religious causes in addition to the fearing from creation a civil disorder as a result of public gathering . The famous poets and prose writing of this time are Sir Thomas Browne, Thomas Fuller, Henry Vaughan, Edmund Waller . The Neo-classical Period - 1600-1785
Restoration Period – 1660-1700 The span of this period started from 1660 until 1700 . In this time , This period recorded the coming back of the theater to the life after the puritans cancelled it in 1642 . The major and notable poet among this period was John Dryden who contributed with other writers and dramatist in developing the distinctive comedy of manners which called ( restoration comedy ) . The Augustan Age - 1700-1745 The Augustan age extended from 1700 to 1745 . The age was the brilliant literary period of Virgil , Horace and Ovid . Writing of this period was novelist and journalist and it focused on social concerns and the ideals of moderation , decorum and urbanity . The Age Of Sensibility - 1745-1785 The age of sensibility roughly ranged from the half of eighteenth century until 1785 . This time recorded the growing of sympathy for the middle ages and cultural primitivism in addition to, emphasis on instincts and feelings . This period recorded released a group of writers including critics , poets , novelist , etc . The most famous one was Samuel Johnson whose literary works dominated on this period so this period known as the age of Johnson . . The Romantic Period - 1785-1830 The romantic period was a time of French revolution . It extended from 1785 to 1830 . The Romantic period was based on emotion, adventure and imagination And this was obvious in the poems of William Word Worth and Samuel Coleridge the two major poets of this period in addition to prose writing of Charles Lomb , William Hazlitt , Jane Austen , etc . The Victorian Period - 1832-1901 The beginning of this age remarked from 1832 to the death of queen Victoria in 1901 . The writing of this age reflected social , economic , religious and intellectual issues especially the period recorded the occurrence of industrial revolution . In addition to emersion of feminist movement and feminist writers . Among the notable poet of the period were Alfred , lord Tennyson ,Robert browning , etc . The Edwardian Period - 1901-1910 This period covered the reign of king Edward VII from 1901 to 1910 . Among this time great and famous poets appeared like Thomas Hardy , Alfred Noyes, William Butler Yeats , etc and the most important things that achieved during this period were in prose fiction - works by Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Ford, John Galsworthy . The Georgian Period - 1910-1936 This period referred to the reign in England of four successive Georges to the reign of George 7 . The most important thin that remarked this period was Georgian poetry which published by Edward Marsh between 1912 and 1922 . The Modern Period – 1914

This period has been marked by and multi dimensioned experiments in subject matter, form, and style, and has produced major achievements in all the literary types. Many notable writers of this time are the poets W. B. Yeats, Wilfred Owen, etc ; the novelists Joseph Conrad, James Joyce , etc; the dramatists G. Β. Shaw, Sean O'Casey, Noel Coward, etc ; and the critics T. S. Eliot, I. A. Richards, etc . Post Modernism period – 1939 – 1945
