I have been told that I can have a scholarship to study engineering in America. If I decide to study, I will have –on the one hand – good opportunities of good education and on the other, I think I will meet new people of different culture. This has some good points and negative ones.
On the positive side, there are several big benefits from this experience. First of all, I will go out of Gaza which has been under siege for four years. Secondly, I will travel across Egypt to fly to France and then across the Atlantic Ocean for 8-hour journey. Thirdly, I will see new views and landscape that I have never seen before. Fourthly, my English will get better by practice. Finally, it will be a whole new experience.
On the negative side, I will encounter some problems. In the first place, feeling homesick: "East or west, home is best". This homesickness may hold back my progress in making my dreams come true. Feeling loneliness may cause depression and failure. In the second place, the American attitude towards Palestinians. Everybody knows that America support Israel and –at the same time –prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state through the pro Israeli policy. The feeling of being stranger is another hinder point that may cause fear and frustration.
On balance, I decided to go to America despite all these obstacles because I have one goal in my mind: to have a university degree and come back to serve my people and my country. For me it is my top priority and I am sure I can overcome all my troubles ahead.
